final concert

There was a brazilian bar that was wonderful, and agreed to let them play outside at the tables, even after eleven. So I started drawing them, just the very rough beginnings of a sketch, and almost immediately the couple sitting behind me leaned over and asked if it would offend me if they offered me, and all the musicians, a beer in exchange for a portrait of them. Of course you wouldn’t offend me; I was amazingly flattered. It was one of the most exhillerating and terrifying experiences I’ve ever done. My hands were shaking by the end. Even while I was still drawing them, someone came up to me and said they had a table of four; could I do them too? So I did, and it was all this very strange mix of italian and hands and ink and movement and bright lights in the middle of blackness, and when they asked what I was drinking so that they might pay me, I told them, “Sincerely, if you could just give me money it would be better; I need to pay my rent in a few days…” And so they gave me 10,00, and a got another commission at another table. We spent a very enjoyable half hour talking to the owners as they closed, and finally drove home ourselves at 2:30, exhausted but happier than I’d been in a long time. There is nothing so satisfying as fulfilling a lifelong dream.
